Angola - Luanda / Ressalvas

O topónimo Luanda provém do étimo lu-ndandu.

                                          **************************
Luanda, founded by Portugal in 1576 under the name of São Paulo de Loanda is the largest city and the capital of Angola. Located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, is the main port and administrative center of Angola and Portuguese-speaking world's third-largest city, behind São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The inhabitants of Luanda are mostly members of African ethnic groups, mainly ambundu, ovimbundu and bakongo then. There is a significant minority of European origin mainly Portuguese, and an important Chinese community. The official and the most widely spoken is Portuguese. The city earns the name through its island (Ilha de Luanda), where the first Portuguese colonists settled. The toponym comes from the Luanda etymon lu-ndandu. The prefix lu, originally one of the forms of the plural in the bantu languages. Refers to the area surrounded by the sea.
Ndandu means value or traded and alludes to the exploitation of small Buzios harvested on the island of Luanda and that constituted the currency in the ancient Kingdom of Kongo. City served as the pronunciation of the name of several regions to their way of speaking, by removing some sounds when these do not change the meaning of the word, of Lu-ndandu moved to Lu-andu. The word, in the process of anglicization, happened to be female, once referred to an island, and resulted in Luanda. Another version for the origin of the name says that it derives from "Axiluandas" (men of the sea), name given by the Portuguese to the inhabitants of the island, because when ai arrived and asked them what they were doing, they answered "uwanda", a word that in kikongo, was working with fishing nets.
The city of Luanda is made up of six municipalities: Cazenga, Ingombota, Kilamba Kiaxi, Maianga, Rangel and Sambizanga. Samba, Cacuaco and Viana are part of the province of Luanda, but are already out of the urban area of Luanda. The central area of Luanda is divided into two parts, the downtown Luanda (the old city) and the Cidade Alta (known for "new city"). Downtown Luanda is situated next to the harbour and has narrow streets and ancient buildings of colonial times. The coastline is marked by the Bay of Luanda, formed by the continental coastline protection through the island of Luanda and the Mussulo Bay, South of the main urban core, formed by the sandbank of Mussulo. There are no large rivers on the coast of terminating within the city, but many streams form the basins stormwater system from Luanda.
The closest rivers are Kwanza, the longest river of Angola which makes the southern boundary between the province of Luanda and Bengo province and the Bengo River which forms the northern boundary with the same province. The inhabitants of Luanda are mostly members of Bantu ethnic groups. The original population of the region are the Ambundu, particularly those of the Group (Axi) Luanda (Lwanda) whose name derives from the town. Also very numerous groups of Ovimbundu and Bakongo and minorities from all major ethnic groups of the country, the Côkwe to the Ovambo.
